Political compulsions driving SP towards Cong: Ajit singh

The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) led by Ajit Singh today said it will take a final decision on July 7 on whether or not to support the UPA government in the event of a trust motion in Parliament.

KOCHI: The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) led by Ajit Singh today said it will take a final decision on July 7 on whether or not to support the UPA government in the event of a trust motion in Parliament.

The RLD has been supporting the UPA government from outside for the past four years. But a final decision on whether or not to support the government if it seeks a confidence motion will be taken only on july 7, RLD President Ajit Singh told a press meet here.

RLD has 3 LoK sabha MPs and a Rajya sabha MP. "Political compulsions and not merits of the Indo-US nuclear deal was driving Samajwadi party closer to Congress, Singh said when asked about SP's overtures to Congress.

After campaigning against the nuclear deal for the past six months, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav now says he has not read it. It is not on merit of the treaty alone that SP was deciding on whom to align with, Singh, SP's former ally, said adding there are many other issues involved.

On BJP leader L K Advani demanding that UPA government seek a confidence vote, he said that in the event of the Left withdrawing support, the President can ask the government to seek a trust vote.

As the government is not depending on BJP's support, technically the saffron party cannot ask the government to seek a confidence vote, though politically they can.

On BSP describing the nuclear deal as 'anti Muslim', he said this was a 'misperception' and was being said to "settle political scores. This is not a Hindu or Muslim issue."
