JODHPUR: There should be a policy for acquisition of the arable land for developmental purposes in order to ensure food secutiry, an agriculture expert has said.

Arable land should be left for agricultural purposes and barren or non-arable land, which is to the tune of 120 million hectare in the country, should be used for the infrastructural development purposes, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences President R B Singh said at a function here today.

Singh said that judicious use of arable land is directly proportional to the food security of the nation.

Central Arid Zone Research Institute ( CAZRI) Director M M Roy said that the land holding has found to be reduced from 7 hectare to mere 3.5 hectare and the challenges are lurking that how obtain the maximum profitability with this reduced land holding.

"Keeping this in mind, we have now been focusing on better soil management and integrated farming system for both arable and non-arable land," he said.
