Police to examine Jaya's remark, says deputy CM

Probably under pressure from MNS chief Raj Thackeray, deputy CM RR Patil said the police would check if Ms Jaya Bachchan’s recent remark had offended Maharashtrians.

MUMBAI: The state police will now examine Jaya Bachchans speech too. Probably under pressure from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and his pro-Marathi tirade, deputy chief minister RR Patil on Tuesday said the police would check if Ms Bachchans recent remark had offended Maharashtrians.

Mr Patil said Ms Bachchans remarks, made during a music album release in Mumbai, will be referred to the police.

Its not proper for anybody to make remarks that are derogatory or disturb social harmony. The police will check if Ms Bachchan has said something to this effect, Mr Patil said. He added, however: Hindi is our national language and hence, there should be no opposition to it. But everybody must respect the local language. It is fair to expect that people living in the state should speak Marathi and respect Maharashtrians.

He warned Mr Thackeray against taking the law into his hands. No one is allowed to do that. The police will take stern action if anyone tries to enforce the law...., he said.

Mr Patil also asked the MNS chief not to go ahead with his ban on Bachchan films. I have read that Ms Bachchan has apologised. That was Mr Thackerays demand. I expect him to withdraw the protest now, Mr Patil said. Incidentally, the NCP has also taken exception to Ms Bachchans remark. State unit president Arun Gujarathi on Monday said Ms Bachchan should not have shown disrespect to Maharashtrians and Marathi.

Asked if the Congress-NCP government was being soft on Mr Thackeray since the MNS campaign had the potential to damage the Shiv Sena, Mr Patil said the state government was swift in its action against against Mr Thackeray when he was booked for speaking out against a community.

In Maharashtras history, there has not been quicker action under this section against anybody. This makes it clear that we will act against anybody who disturbs the law and order situation, Mr Patil said.
