KOLKATA: A 45-year-old assistant sub inspector of police was beaten to death by a group of miscreants after the police personnel protested against some of the 'anti-social work' the goons were doing in the area. The incident took place late in the evening yesterday at Mirik in Darjeeling. The deceased police personnel had been identified as Amehed Gurung.

Amehed Gurung got involved in a brawl with a local goon in the area yesterday, said an eye-witness. Initially, the goon left the place. However, they returned late at night with several other miscreants. All of them were drunk and carrying iron rods and sticks, added a source. Gurung was on duty at the Mirik Bazzar area when the group attacked him. The locals rescued him and he was rushed to the primary health centre, later he was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries today.

A senior police official said that raids are being conducted to nab the culprits. Seven of them have already been taken in police custody, he added.
