Police lag pace with newer techniques and methods devised by terrorists: Intelligence Bureau

Stating that the spectre of terror continued to haunt the nation, IB chief Nehchal Sandhu described the high court strike as a grave reminder of the same.

NEW DELHI: The Intelligence Bureau has admitted that the police apparatus had not been able to keep pace with the newer techniques and methods devised by the terrorists to escape surveillance while plotting and executing terror strikes.

"The Indian police apparatus has not been quick enough to change tactics and strategies to match the terrorists," IB chief Nehchal Sandhu conceded in his address to the DGP conference here on Thursday.

This is the first admission of a possible security lapse behind the September 7 blast at the Delhi High Court. Stating that the spectre of terror continued to haunt the nation, Sandhu described the high court strike as a grave reminder of the same.

"The terrorists are working in small groups...they are using indigenous material and quick transport facilities for movement," he noted. In an apparent reference to the lack of a breakthrough in recent terror cases, Sandhu suggested "the proven techniques may have to be abandoned and new ones devised."

Expressing concern over the growing threat of Left-wing extremism in many states, the IB director warned that Maoists had reinforced their capacities, were undertaking movement in large groups and using improvised ordnance.
