Police is a 'service' not a 'force', says Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul today said police is a "service" not a "force" whose biggest priority should be to provide assistance to the public and win their confidence.

Speaking at the inaugural session of 15th Vertical Interaction Course for IPS officers held in Nainital, Paul said instilling a sense of confidence among people should be the goal of every police department functionary.

Good police-public relations can prevent many potential problems on the law and order front, he said.

Asking police officers to look upon themselves as "public servants" and not as a "force", he said they should ensure their availability to people all the time, listen to their grievances with patience and redress them in an impartial and professional manner to win their confidence.

Paul also underlined the importance of leadership qualities in officials of all uniformed forces which, he said, inspires confidence of people.

For quick redressal of public grievances, police officials should also be friendly with the use of modern means of information and technology, he said.

A retired IPS officer himself, the Governor said analysing case studies can also go a long way in increasing the professional skills and efficiency of the police force.
