Police firing at Nandigram, situation tense

IGP, Western Range, A Gupta told the media here that 10 policemen were injured in the brickbatting by the mob. Seven of them were rushed to hospital while others received minor injuries.

He said the police fired six rounds in the air when they were attacked by the members of the 'Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee', spearheading the agitation against land acquisition for the proposed Special Economic Zone.

A CPI-M office at Dinabhandupur under Nandigram PS was torched by the supporters of the Ucched Committee, he said.

IGP (law and order) Raj Kanojia said in Kolkata that the situation remained tense at Nandigram. Combat force personnel have moved in to Nandigram.

A local panchayat member S P Maicap charged the police with instigating the violence at Dinabhandupur.

Trenches were dug at some points of the roads leading to Dinabhandupur and Sonachura. Road blocks were also set up at various points by the agitators who were not allowing outsiders to the area.

Even media persons were asked to show their identity cards.

The state-wide bandh was called by the opposition Trinamool Congress, Congress, BJP and other parties to protest the violence at Nandigram yesterday which led to six deaths.

Six persons were killed and about 25 injured in East Midnapore district on Sunday over land acquisition for a SEZ.

The deaths occurred in armed clashes between the CPI-M and the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee comprising Trinamool Congress, SUCI, Jamaat-e-Ulema Hind and a naxalite faction opposing the reported notification for land acquisition for the SEZ to be developed by Indonesia-based Salim group.
