HYDERABAD: Police tonight broke the five-day-old indefinite hunger strike of YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, at the Chanchalguda jail here and got him shifted to a government hospital.

As his health deteriorated, Jagan was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital here at around 11.50 pm in a bullet-proof vehicle amidst heavy security from the jail.

"A health check-up has been done and his glucose level is decreasing while blood pressure and pulse rate are normal," a senior jail official told PTI, adding that he was shifted to the hospital for specialised treatment.

Jagan's mother Y S Vijayamma and other party leaders rushed to the jail and subsequently to the hospital.

Amid reports that Jagan may be shifted to hospital, a large number of supporters gathered at the Chanchalguda Jail even as police tightened security around the jail and barricaded roads near it.

The jailed Kadapa MP, who has been lodged at the Chanchalguda Central Prison since May last year after his arrest by the CBI on corruption charges, launched an indefinite fast seeking "justice for Seemandhra people" last Sunday.
