New Delhi: The government is considering a triangular design for the new Parliament building and shifting the Prime Minister’s Office and residence right opposite it in the major revamp project Central Vista. Close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence would be an eight-floor common secretariat complex, which would be constructed after demolishing a few major buildings near Rajpath.

According to sources, the ministry of housing and urban affairs is favourably considering a triangular-shaped new building for Parliament. The building would be inside the present Parliament complex. The new Lok Sabha will provide seating space for 900 members. The joint sitting of the Parliament would take place here. A senior ministry official, who did not wish to be identified, said, "These are designs which would be put before presiding officers of both the Houses. Only after their approval would these be finalised."

The new PMO and and Modi’s residence is likely to be constructed where the present parking facility is located in Parliament complex. This would also help in easing traffic in the area as VIP movements cause inconvenience to people. The government has reiterated that it would not touch any heritage building. However, which buildings would be demolished has not been finalised.

The revamp project has at its centre construction of a common secretariat building. North and South Blocks would be turned into museum and opened up for the common public. This plan would be integrated with a biodiversity park being planned behind the two blocks, next to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The official quoted earlier said, "This would be a project similar to Louvre – like opening up palaces for the common people. More public space would be available once the revamp project is completed."
