PM's accountability will be decided in people's court: Congress

NEW DELHI: Unfazed by the Supreme Court's rejection of a plea for a court-monitored SIT probe into bribery allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress today said battle of fixing his accountability will be decided in people's court.

"Instead of hiding behind technicalities. Simple issue is whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi took money from Sahara and Birla groups or not. He needs to answer it as this is an issue of answerability before 125 crore Indians and doesn't require a certificate from any court," Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said in a statement.

"They (documents) contain names of person who received the money, who gave the money, date and place of payment. Does Modiji deny it? Please come forward and tell this simple answer," Dikshit added.


Stating that Modi always claims 'zero tolerance for corruption', Diskshit asked what prevents him from coming forward and submitting himself to an independent probe.

Modi should practice what he preaches, the Congress leader added.

Earlier in the day, Supreme Court rejected plea for a court-monitored SIT probe into bribery allegations against Modi on the basis of documents seized during the raids in business houses--Sahara and Birla-- on the ground they had no no evidentiary value.

The apex court said the case is based on "random materials" like loose sheets, papers, e-mail print outs is "merit less" as they are "inadmissible materials" having "no evidentiary value under the law" to order registration of FIR and investigation, more so against the high constitutional functionaries.
