PMK walk out over naming of Puducherry
PMK members today staged a walkout during question time in the Puducherry Assembly today protesting the government adopting the name of `Pondicherry` for the town limits instead of using the name `Puducherry`.

PUDUCHERRY: PMK members today staged a walkout during question time in the Puducherry Assembly today protesting the government adopting the name of `Pondicherry` for the town limits instead of using the name `Puducherry`.
PMK Legislature Party Leader R.K.R.Anandaraman, who tabled the main question, said the Central Government had through an Act of Parliament renamed Union Territory of Pondicherry as Union Territory of Puducherry and this renaming was done in the wake of a unanimous resolution by the territorial assembly.
He said it was shocking to see that Puducherry Government was adopting the name of Pondicherry for the town limits instead of Puducherry. While the whole Union Territory had been known now as Union Territory of Puducherry how could Pondicherry be adopted for the town limits deviating from the Central Act? he asked.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy told Anandaraman that the name of Pondicherry in respect of the town limits was virtually a globally recognised nomenclature and in tourism sector this name was very popular.
Intervening, Industries Minister V.Vaithilingam said Pondicherry was not a name with alien or British connotation. 'Pandiannaattar` in Tamil highlighted only the Tamil tradition and the Tamil name of `Pondy`. Hence there need be no different opinion that by using the name Pondicherry the alien name crept in. Unconvinced with the replies, PMK members walked out of the House.
