PM told us our uranium was for defence needs : BJP

BJP has claimed that PM had told its leaders that the imported uranium post Indo-US nuclear deal would be used for civilian purposes while the indigenous uranium would serve the country's defence needs.

NEW DELHI : BJP on Monday claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had told its leaders that the imported uranium post Indo-US nuclear deal would be used for civilian purposes while the indigenous uranium would serve the country's defence needs.
Senior BJP leader Arun Shourie said that this statement was made in a meeting called by the Prime Minister in August 2007, during which the 123 agreement was discussed.
The meeting was attended by former prime minister A B Vajpayee, L K Advani, Brajesh Mishra and Shourie among others.
"The PM told us that the nuclear deal will give India greater manoeuvrability in its weapons programs because we can use the imported uranium for the power program and our uranium for the defence program," Shourie said.
Shourie said the Prime Minister was using the argument given by defence expert K Subramanium. "We told him that five clauses were added in the Hyde Act to prevent India from using its uranium for defence purposes," he said.
He said the PM lapsed into silence when the BJP leaders told him this fact.
