PM told UK India will react if Pak repeats 26/11: WikiLeaks

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had told former British foreign minister , David Miliband, that he had invested much political capital in improving ties with Pakistan.

LONDON: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had told former British foreign minister , David Miliband, that he had invested much political capital in improving ties with Pakistan but the 26/11 attack destroyed that, an American diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks on Saturday has revealed. The PM made it clear to him that India would react if it is attacked again.

The cable, based on British foreign office’s briefing to London’s US embassy on Miliband’s January 2009 India visit, said Miliband was struck by how closely Indian leaders, including the Prime Minister and foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee, spoke from the same script on the attack.

‘‘ Amongst Indian leaders, there was deep concern and anger at Pakistan’s lack of serious action and merely cosmetic gestures,’’ the cable said.

It said Mukherjee made it clear to Miliband that India would not receive any high level visitors from Pakistan or support a joint investigation into the attack unless Pakistan takes a meaningful action. ‘‘ Miliband praised Singh and Mukherjee for India’s restraint and indicated that the UK had no evidence to suggest that the GOP (government of Pakistan ) was officially involved,’’ the cable said.
