PM to lay foundation stone for BSL expansion programme
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone for the capacity expansion programme of state-run steel giant SAIL's Bokaro plant this month.
The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) plans to ramp up its total capacity to 7.5 million tons (MT) from the current 4.5 MT.
"The Prime Minister will lay foundation stone for BSL's expansion programme worth Rs 8,000 crore on April 22," a senior official in the Steel Ministry told PTI.
This expansion plan is part of Steel Authority of India Limited's (SAIL) overall expansion and modernisation programme worth Rs 54,000 crore to upscale its capacity to 26 MT by 2010.
BSL, considered to be one of the profitable plants of the PSU, currently produces flat products like hot rolled coils, hot rolled plates, hot rolled sheets, cold rolled coils and cold rolled sheets.
SAIL is also planning to ramp up capacity of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to 4.5 MT from current 2.5 MT, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) to 7.5 MT from 4.82 and Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) to 3.5 from 2 MT by 2010, he added.
SAIL, which entered its golden jubilee year of production in February, is India's largest steel producing company and among the top five highest profit earning corporates of the country. The company also achieved highest-ever sales during 2007-08 at 12.4 million tons.
"SAIL is increasing its production capacity to bridge the increasing demand-supply mismatch as the demand for the commodity continues to grow at about 12 per cent annually," he said.
