NEW DELHI: The PM, Congress president and senior Union ministers reviewed the situation arising out of the Malegaon bomb blasts when they met for the Congress core committee meeting at 7 Race Course Road.

The home minister briefed the meeting about his ministry’s understanding of the incidents, as well as the steps that have been taken to control the situation. Mr Patil is scheduled to visit Malegaon on Saturday.

In a message, PM Manmohan Singh, while condemning the twin blasts, has asked people to maintain communal harmony and peace. Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also condemned the incident and appealed to the people to maintain peace. She is also expected to visit the site to meet the families of the victims.

The Centre and the Congress leadership have asked the Maharashtra government to take all steps to ensure communal harmony in the state. The CPM and CPI have also condemned the bomb blasts, saying the explosions were calculated to provoke communal tension.

“We appeal to the people to remain calm and not fall prey to any provocation,” CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said.
The CPI central secretariat issued a statement saying terrorists cannot succeed in weakening India through such “cowardly attacks targeting innocent people”.

It said that considering the fact that the attacks took place despite warnings, the situation demanded more co-ordinated and effective measures against terrorists.
