NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the mausoleum of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar in Yangon on Thursday and also offer prayers at the Kali temple there, as part of the itinerary for his first bilateral visit to Myanmar.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh too had visited the memorial to the emperor during his state visit to the southeastern nation in 2012. Senior officials said Modi will also visit the Shri Kali temple in downtown Yangon and participate in a ‘puja’ there. The temple was built in 1871 by P Ramanoojam Chetty, who came to Myanmar from Bellary in Andhra in 1869. The property was later bequeathed by him to four trustees who popularised the temple among the Indian community in Yangon.

During his visit to Bagan city on Wednesday, Modi will be visiting the Bagan viewing tower, from where one gets good view of over 2,000 temples and monuments.
