PM Narendra Modi government surrendered on vital interests of the country to US pressure, says CPM
NEW DELHI: Government has "surrendered on vital interests of the country, strategic and economic to US pressure," a CPM statement said on Tuesday reacting to Obama's visit.

"The nuclear liability agreement indicates this surrender," it said. Details of the renewed Defence Framework Agreement for the next 10 years, it said, hadn't been made public. Accusing the gov ernment of helping US in profit maximization, CPM said, India is now committed to buying US products for nuclear energy , military equipment and "greener technologies" for limiting carbon emissions.

Instead of 'Make in India', it is promoting Made in USA".

CPM said the Civil Nuclear Liability Act Parliament passed in 2010 was to protect rights of Indians to compensation in the event of a nuclear accident. "Government, to meet persistent US demand to nullify such clauses, chose to circumvent them."

"The creation of an insurance pool by Indian public sector insur ance companies and ?nancial contribution of government together amounting to Rs 1500 crore, the supplier's liability has been transferred to Indian taxpayers," it said.

CPM said attempts have been made to circumvent the Act's Sec 46 stating nuclear accident victims can sue operators or suppliers for damages.

"The government promises to issue a memorandum of law to dilute the intent of this clause, which is dubious," it said.
