NEW DELHI: The Congress has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for saying that his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina should be congratulated for her resolve to fight terrorism, “despite being a woman.”

As Modi drew flak on Twitter with the hashtag ‘Despite being a woman’ trending the entire day on Monday, Congress jumped in and said the prime minister’s Big Brother attitude was uncalled for. Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said, “this cannot be called smart diplomacy.

He must take lessons in diplomacy. And he must be given precise notes to read when he goes on his foreign trips because he ends up embarrassing the nation.”

Delivering a speech at Dhaka University, Modi praised Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina saying, “The countries in the world are unsure about how to tackle terrorism. The UN is also not in a position to guide them. It is heartening that Prime Minister of Bangladesh despite the fact that she is a woman is openly saying that she has zero tolerance for terrorism. I would like to congratulate Sheikh Hasina for her firmness to deal with the menace.”

“What are you saying about women? Do you mean to say that women are cowards? Do you mean to say they cannot take tough decisions,” asked Sharma.
