A remark made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Rajya Sabha while felicitating new deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh has been expunged from the records.

The remark was on BK Hariprasad, the Opposition candidate for the election to the post of RS deputy chairman. While congratulating both the contestants post the election on Thursday, Modi proceeded to pun on Hariprasad's name, which was immediately objected to by Opposition members.

Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said in the House that he will look into the remarks and see if there was something objectionable.

After the session Hariprasad was quoted by news sites as saying that the comment lowered the dignity of the House.

Modi's remark was subsequently removed from the records, Parliament sources told ET, making it a rare instance of a prime minister's statement being removed from the records of the House.

Harivansh Narayan Singh defeated Hariprasad of the Congress by 125 votes to 105 on Thursday in a contest that never looked like getting close once the ruling front candidate got the support of Naveen Patnaik's BJD.
