PM Modi to launch Rs 5,200-cr projects in Kolkata, targets TMC ahead of 2026 polls

Kolkata: Ahead of coming to West Bengal on Friday with an array of infrastructural projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday about “public anger against Trinamool Congress” and how West Bengal is looking forward towards BJP for growth and development.

“I am eager to be among BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda,” Modi posted in his X Handle.

Ahead of 2026 assembly polls, Modi is set to visit West Bengal for the third time in the last four months, with several infrastructure projects. In a bid to strengthen infrastructure projects and pave the path for a growth-oriented development in Bengal, the PM is scheduled to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over Rs 5,200 crore at Kolkata.


In a major boost to road infrastructure project in the state, Modi will lay the foundation stone of 7.2 km long six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, a project which is worth over Rs 1,200 crore. Kona Expressway will enhance connectivity between Howrah, surrounding rural areas, and Kolkata, saving travel time.

With an enhanced focus on urban connectivity, the PM will inaugurate metro railway projects in Kolkata. A 13.61 km long newly constructed metro network will be inaugurated and metro services will be launched on these routes.

“The city for whose development we are resolute, coming to the people of that Kolkata is always a joy for me. The events in Kolkata tomorrow are primarily related to transportation,” Modi wrote in his X Handle post, a day before coming to Kolkata. “The metro services on the Noapara-Jai Hind Airport, Sealdah-Esplanade, and Beliaghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes will be inaugurated. This will make commuting to the airport and the IT hub more convenient.”

A 13.61 km long newly constructed metro network will be inaugurated and metro services will be launched on these routes. He will visit the Jessore Road Metro Station, where he will flag off the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service from Jessore Road. After flagging off metro train services on the new sections, the Prime Minister is scheduled to take a metro ride from Jessore Road Metro Station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and back.

In addition, through video conferencing, he will also flag off the Sealdah–Esplanade metro service and the Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro service.

The visit comes just weeks after the Prime Minister was in Bengal on July 18, only a few days before the TMC’s annual ‘Shahid Divas’ mega-rally. He addressed a public rally in Alipurduar on May 29.

With West Bengal gearing up for the 2026 Assembly elections, the PM's visit is significant to boost the morale of the party workers in Bengal.
