Speaking in Gujarati in a special address, Modi condemned the incidents of violence in the state that broke out after police arrested Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti convenor Hardik Patel from the GMDC ground in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night and lathicharged people on hungerstrike demanding reservation in jobs for the Patidar community.

"Violence has not done good for anyone," Modi said adding that all the issues can be resolved through dialogue. "I appeal to the people of Gujarat to not resort to violence. Together, let us be supportive of the growth process that has been initiated," Modi said in his address.

CM Anandiben Patel, Gujarat Congress chief Bharatsinh Solanki, spiritual leader Morari Bapu and others appealed for calm. Hardik Patel had called for a Gujarat bandh after he was released from police custody on Tuesday night and the Patel agitators took to the streets across the state to enforce the bandh. He also accused the police of being responsible for the violence in the state. "Police has behaved like terrorists and beat up people."
