PM Modi replies to Sharif, calls for violence free atmosphere in the region

NEW DELHI: Reciprocating the letter written to him on June 02, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written back to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif condemning the Karachi airport attack and has called for violence free atmosphere in the region.

In this letter Modi condemned “in strongest terms” the terror attacks at the Karachi airport on Sunday night in which 23 people were killed, including 10 terrorists, senior government sources told ET on Friday. The letter to Sharif was sent yesterday.

The Prime Minister made serious and careful consideration of the June 2 letter by Sharif to him for five days before replying back, sources had earlier told ET. Modi also thanked Sharif for the saree to his mother.

In his letter Sharif had expressed satisfaction over his meeting with Modi on May 27 and said he was looking forward to working with him in “harmony on all unsettled matters”.

Sharif who was among the seven leaders from neighbouring countries to attend Modi’s swearing-in on May 26, said the future of the poor was integrated with “our common economic destiny”.

Modi had asked Sharif in their meeting to clamp down on terror and ensure speedy trial of Mumbai terror attack case in Pakistan.

On Sunday night, an audacious terror attack was mounted at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport. On Tuesday, the Airport Security Force (ASF) Academy's camp near the airport came under attack from heavily-armed Taliban gunmen. However, no casualties were reported in the second attack.
