New Delhi: Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday discussed measures to combat foreign fighters and Islamic State in Afghanistan as well as joint Sino-India plans to train Afghan diplomats.

Ghani, who was here on a day-long visit to seek India’s support amid rising instability in his country, briefed Modi on the reconciliation process.

It is also understood that the two leaders also discussed Moscow format of talks. India is also expected to launch collaboration with Russia to stabilise Afghanistan.

Beginning October, India and China will jointly train Afghan diplomats after the two sides at the informal Wuhan Summit decided to explore joint projects in Afghanistan.

A small batch of Afghan diplomats will be initially trained in China, followed by their training in India, ET has learnt. China in the past has joined hands with the US to train Afghan diplomats.

Later, at a public event, Ghani emphasised that Afghanistan is not on the verge of collapse as it has “forces, resources, and public support”.
