PM lauds Indian diaspora's contribution to Malaysia

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh applauded the Indian diaspora in Malaysia for its contribution to the economic, political and cultural fabric of this country while preserving their Indian roots and culture.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday applauded the Indian diaspora in Malaysia for its contribution to the economic, political and cultural fabric of this country while preserving their Indian roots and culture.

"This is not an easy task but you (the diaspora) have successfully done so," he told more than 500 members of the ethnic Indian community here at the packed ballroom of Renaissance hotel.

The gathering included S Subramaniam, Malaysian Human Resources Minister and leader of the largest ethnic Indian political party 'Malaysian Indian Congress', apart from business leaders and corporate heads of Indian ethnicity.

Singh said that his counterpart Najib Razak's visit to India in January this year and his own trip here now showed the two countries were serious and sincere about cementing their strong ties.

India-Malaysia ties have grown substantially in the last five years, he said, adding the two Prime Ministerial visits showed "sincere common vision" to take the relationship to greater heights.

Singh said Malaysia had transformed itself into a modern, democratic country and provided a "unique developmental model" for the entire developing world.

He urged the Malaysians to invest in India, noting that the Indian economy with the GDP of one trillion dollar was expected to grow at nine to ten per cent.

"I invite you to make full use of investment opportunities in India in the best possible manner as you can," Singh said, a day after the two countries inked a trade-opening Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) which will come into effect from July 2011.

The Prime Minister said that with cultural and social links to India, the Malaysian Indian business community had a unique bridge to foster economic linkages between the two countries.

He also lauded the efforts of the Malaysian Indians to preserve their Indian culture and said this had prompted India to open the India Cultural Centre here recently.
