NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Minister of State Jitendra Singh to attend funeral of veteran politician P A Sangma, the first Lok Sabha Speaker from the North East.

68-year-old Sangma passed away here today.

Singh, Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, has been asked by the Prime Minister to attend the funeral, official sources said.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at Sangma's home town Tura, West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, they said.

Sangma was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly from 1990 to 1991.
