Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the killing of Food Corporation of India executive director Phul Chand Ram and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday condemned the killing of Food Corporation of India (FCI) executive director Phul Chand Ram and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

In his message to the family, Singh said he was greatly distressed to hear the killing of the officer who was kidnapped by militants in April.

Singh described the killing as "dastardly and shameful act" which has shocked the country.

It needs to be condemned in the strongest terms, he said adding the country was with the family members in their moment of grief.

Ram, the FCI head in the North East, was kidnapped along with his driver Rabiram Basumatary by the ULFA on April 17 in Guwahati's Ulubari area when he was returning home from office. Basumatary was released later.

Ram's body was found last Saturday in a pit at Anandapur village on the banks of the Mora Pagladia river in Baksa district.
