PM calls military meet as Pakistan tensions grow
NEW DELHI: PM Manmohan Singh on Friday summoned his military chiefs to a meeting amid tensions with rival Pakistan over last month's carnage in Mumbai, officials in New Delhi said.

Manmohan Singh was closeted with the chiefs of air force, navy and the million-plus army to review "India's defence preparedness," an official from the premier's office said.

"The three chiefs made presentations on India's defence preparedness and reviewed conventional military threat scenarios as well as counter-measures now in place," the official, who did not want to be named, said.

Ties between the two nuclear-armed rivals have nosedived since the November 26 Mumbai attacks, which New Delhi blames on Pakistan-based militants.

Both sides have said they do not want war but warn they would act if provoked.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, two of them over disputed Kashmir.

India has said the tottering peace process with Pakistan is now on hold in the wake of the attacks in Mumbai, in which 172 people including nine of the gunmen were killed.
