Kalburgi's wife, in her plea, said that the investigation in Dabholkar and Pansare murder cases was in a "sorry state" and no progress has been made in bringing the killers to book.
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and Karnataka government for a probe by a special investigation team into the killing of scholar and rationalist MM Kalburgi in August 2013.

A three-judge bench comprising CJI Dipak Misra and Justices AM Kanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, were acting on a plea filed by his widow Umadevi Kalburgi.

She had complained to the top court about the shoddy probe into the killing. The Karnataka CID is probing the case. Instead, she sought an investigation by a special team of Karnataka police under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge.

She also claimed that her husband’s murder and the murder of two other activists in Maharashtra were inter-connected and urged the court to issue directions to Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, the CBI, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to have a coordinated probe. The probe had not yielded any results in last three years despite assurances from the state, she contended.
