Plea for continuation of CBI probe rejected

The Calcutta High Court division bench comprising chief justice S S Nijjar and P C Ghose on Monday rejected a plea for continuation of CBI inquiry in the Nandigram killings.

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court division bench comprising chief justice S S Nijjar and P C Ghose on Monday rejected a plea for continuation of CBI inquiry in the Nandigram killings.

The decison is being seen as a victory for the CPM and state government as it allows mischief-mongers time to destroy the evidence which may still be available at the village in east Midnapore to throw more light on the loss of many human lives on March 14.

“State government appears to have used its political influence in the case. The whole process will get delayed and it was perhaps expected also,” was how a lawyer reacted to the proceedings.

Another section of the legal fraternity claimed that the division bench’s ruling is clearly an attempt to diffuse tension in the state.

Refusal to hand over the CBI report is also indicative of the fact. “The court cannot allow itself to get swayed by popular sentiment. Instead, they have to behave responsibly. All the relevant facts are with the court. It can take a final view in due course only.”
