Pinjore mango fest takes off

Over 2,000 mangoes grown in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan were displayed at the 17th Mango Mela at Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, in Panchkula district.

CHANDIGARH: Over 2,000 mangoes grown in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan were displayed at the 17th Mango Mela at Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, in Panchkula district on Sunday.
Entries drew crowds of gourmets and mango enthusiasts despite rainy weather. A traditional crafts bazaar on the same venue showcased its fare to potential buyers.
The Mela was inaugurated by Haryana Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha On Saturday.
Other attractions include a food festival, a special counter of Food Crafts Institute, Faridabad, a street bazaar and evening shows at an amphitheatre on the grounds.
Speaking on the occasion, Chatha said the Haryana government will establish four food parks at Saha (Ambala), Dabwali (Sirsa), Narwana (Jind) and Rai (Sonepat) in the state.
"The Mela is a unique opportunity for the people here to experience the best in mangoes and mango products. The Horticulture Training Institute in Uchani is teaching new farming techniques to farmers in order to encourage them to take up mango cultivation," Chatha said.
