GUWAHATI: Guwahati Commissioner of Police Jyotirmoy Chakravarty today issued an order prohibiting pillion riding on two-wheelers under Section 144 CrPC during the Republic Day.

The order to remain in force from 8 am on January 25 to 8 pm on January 26 prohibits pillion riding on automotive two-whellers of any description in the whole area of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, an official release said.

Police and security personnel in uniform, children below 16 years of age, women and senior citizens are exempted from the purview of the prohibitory order.

The decision to impose the prohibitory order was taken as a preventive measure.

It has been reported that various militant organisations active in the state are planning to carry out subversive activities in the run-up to Republic Day and have already given a call to boycott the celebrations.

The order was further necessitated as cadres of various militant groups use motorcycle to carry out illegal activities, the release added.
