NEW DELHI: A petition was filed on Thursday in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Election Commission to derecognise Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) for his controversial remarks against north Indians.

The petition filed by advocate Arvind Shukla is likely to be mentioned tomorrow before Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan for urgent hearing in the wake of large scale violence by Thackeray's party workers against north Indians, a lawyer associated with the filing of the petition said.

The petitioner has sought directions to the Centre and the Maharashtra Government to take action against Thackeray alleging that his action had endangered the integrity of the nation.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government said it was seeking opinion of the state's Advocate General on the issue of arrest of Thackeray over his remarks.
