Srinagar: The People’s Democratic Party on Friday expelled its Rajya Sabha member Nazir Ahmad Laway from the party for attending the swearing-in ceremony of the first Lieutenant Governor of J&K GC Murmu and indulging in 'anti-party' activities.

Laway was expelled from the party, even as the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is under detention since August 5. “I am not aware of any decision of expulsion from the party. I don’t know who can expel me when the party president is in jail. I am still part of the party,” said Laway, who on Thursday claimed that he attended the oath ceremony in capacity of a Rajya Sabha member and not as PDP member. The decision to expel Laway, the official PDP statement read was taken as his participation in the swearing-in ceremony of LG undermined the party leadership in entirety.

“Participation of the MP was in contravention to the party stand regarding the current political situation and revocation of Article 370,” the spokesman said.
