Payback time: Soren, others to be made Cabinet ministers

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will undertake a minor expansion of his ministerial team in the first week of August.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will undertake a minor expansion of his ministerial team in the first week of August. While Mr Shibu Soren will be inducted into the team, Mr GK Vasan will be elevated as a Cabinet minister.
The Congress had promised two berths in the government to the JMM. The partys Tekalal Mahato or Hemlal Murmu will be made a minister of state.

Mr Vasans elevation is part of the Congress efforts to sort out problems in the faction-ridden Tamil Nadu unit. The move is expected to bring some semblance of unity in the organisation.

Mr Soren was removed from the government when he was sentenced by a lower court in a murder case. After his acquittal in the case, Mr Soren has been demanding his re-induction. Mr Soren had made berths in the government a condition for backing the UPA during the trust vote. With the five JMM MPs voting for the government, it is now payback time.
