Pay hike was long overdue: CPI(M)

NEW DELHI: CPI(M) on Monday said the salary hike of government employees proposed by the 6th Pay Commission was "long overdue" and urgently needed due to the unrelenting inflation.

"The proposed increase in salaries was long overdue, especially due to the rise in cost of living index and unrelenting inflation," party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.

Maintaining that his party would come out with a detailed response after studying the recommendations, he said the proposal for increasing the retirement age to 62 years should be accompanied by removal of the freeze on employment.

"If the ban on fresh recruitment continues, then there will be a reduction in employment opportunities," Yechury added.
