Pay compensation to Sohrabuddin's family: SC to Gujarat

SC directed the Guj govt to pay compensation to the berieved family.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Gujarat government to pay compensation to the family of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster who was shot dead along with two others in a fake encounter in 2007.

A special bench of Justices Tarun Chatterji and Aftab Alam refrained from fixing the amount of compensation after senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the state, pleaded that the quantum may be left to the discretion of the state.

The apex court also said it would consider transferring the probe into the fake encounter case to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is inquiring into the post-Godhra communal riots.
