Pawar reminds Congress of NCP’s support
Ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday told the Congress that the outfit had backed it through “thick and thin” even as his party called for strengthening of the ruling UPA.
He said there was no question of the NCP weakening in its resolve to combat the forces of communalism that threaten the erosion of democratic governance in the country.
A draft political resolution cleared by Extended Working Committee meet on Saturday warned the Congress that communal forces would strength if it failed to have a more broadminded approach.
The Congress which is the principal party of the UPA should make all efforts to build political consensus amongst like-minded secular parties, the draft resolution said. It is primarily the duty of the largest party to carry the smaller parties along, it said. Mr Pawar said that the UPA, the broadest unity among secular and progressive forces, has become a uniquely popular alliance.
