"The Home Minister's irresponsible comment equating Sarabjit Singh, pleading for clemency in Pakistan, with Afzal Guru is shocking," BJP MP and party's Minority Morcha president Syed Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters.
"The Congress wanted to keep the hanging of Afzal Guru pending till the elections in Jammu and Kashmir for its political gains," he said.
Hussain said terrorists have no religion and the accused, whether Hindu or a Muslim, should be punished as per Indian laws.
Muslims in the country were against the scourge of terrorism and they will not be unhappy if Afzal Guru is hanged, he said.
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil sparked off a controversy recently, stating that when the government has been pressing for clemency for Sarabjit Singh who is facing death sentence in Pakistan, how can the demand be made for the hanging of Afzal Guru, who is a condemned prisoner in Parliament attack.
Hussain, a former union minister, came to Hyderabad to campaign for BJP candidate K Laxman in Musheerabad assembly seat going for bypoll on May 29.
State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya said party MP and film actress Hema Malini and other leaders would also campaign for Laxman.
