Patil must bear responsibility, Left says

The Left parties accused the Centre of failing to take "effective steps" to tackle terrorism with the CPI criticising Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil over the handling of internal security.

KOLKATA: The Left parties accused the Centre of failing to take "effective steps" to tackle terrorism with the CPI criticising Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil over the handling of internal security.

"This signifies the colossal failure of intelligence and Home Minister Shivraj Patil has to bear responsibility for the failure," CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta told PTI commenting on the Mumbai terror attacks.

Stating that the nation would stand united to face the challenge posed by terrorists, he said, "the repeated failure of the Intelligence only points to the serious weaknesses in the system and there has been no attempt to remove deficiencies despite repeated terror attacks in different parts of the country."

Pointing out that "countless" people had died in the blasts in Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Malegaon, Delhi and Jaipur, CPI(M) State Secretary and Left Front Chairman Biman Bose said the Centre had "failed" to take effective steps to combat terrorism.

Condemning the Mumbai attacks he said the entire country was stunned. "Such repeated terror attacks are part of an imperialist conspiracy to demolish democracy." Bose called for protest rallies to mobilise people against the menace.
