Patil finally acts, asks Deshmukh to stem violence
After keeping a deafening silence for many days when the supporters of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray was attacking North Indians in Mumbai.
Stepping in formally on behalf of the Centre, Mr Shivraj Patil directed the Maharashtra government to take immediate steps against those indulging in violence against non-Maharashtrians.“ The secular fabric of the state should be ensured and prevented from being damaged by anti-social elements...
The Maharashtra government has been asked to ensure that no individual or group of persons is intimidated, attacked or their properties targeted or damaged and take necessary action against those indulging in such activities without delay,” the home minister said in a statement.
Maintaining that the state must provide protection to those who are vulnerable, Mr Patil said, “Mumbai is the financial and industrial capital of the country which has been built by people of Maharashtra and other parts of India who have enjoyed prosperity and faced adversity together”.
Appealing for peace in his home state, Mr Patil said, “Mumbai all through its history has drawn people from far and near who are well known for their broad-mindedness and hospitality. They should see that reputation of the city is not allowed to be tarnished in any way.”
Meanwhile Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is slated to arrive in Delhi late Wednesday night. Though the state government officials insist that the chief minister was visiting the national capital for some personal work and not summoned by the high command, there were speculations that he may apprise the senior leaders of the Centre and Congress of the situation in Mumbai in the aftermath of the parochial violence.
