NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday asked newly elected Lok Sabha members to participate effectively in Parliament, make an impression in their constituency through Parliament and enhance legislature’s image inside and outside the country.

Shah suggested that new MPs could set aside all party-related differences and contribute to debates and lawmaking through a thorough understanding of the functioning of the House.

The suggestions have come at a time when the Lok Sabha is becoming an arena for shouting slogans and counter-slogans, with some BJP members using majority to pressure the opposition speakers during debates.

Shah advised MPs to spend more time in Parliament library and learn about rules, traditions and procedures. He said a good parliamentarian is one who is happy and inquisitive. He said there are three ways of becoming an effective parliamentarian — be active in the House, create an impression in your constituency through your work in the Lok Sabha and increase your influence by enhancing the reputation of Parliament.

Shah said each Lok Sabha MP represents more than 15 lakh people and thus has a great responsibility in fulfilling their aspirations. He said MPs should understand the process of budget.
