NEW DELHI: Concerned over the huge volatility in stock markets, a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is understood to have been convened for Tuesday.

During the meeting SEBI Chairman M Damodaran is expected to give a presentation, sources said.

However, no official confirmation could be obtained. In view of the huge volatility in the market in the backdrop of a dismal debut of Reliance Power today, the standing committee is likely to hold its meeting tomorrow, sources said.

The benchmark Sensex on the Bombay Stock Exchange today plummeted by 834 points, its third biggest fall in absolute terms, on selling pressure from funds.

Reliance Power, which made its debut on BSE and NSE today, lost 32 per cent, or Rs 175 a share, from the listing price to close at Rs 372.50

Marketmen said fears of a global slowdown also contributed to today's downfall of the stock markets.
