A special debate on the Indian Constitution is set to begin in the Lok Sabha on Friday at noon during the Winter Session of the Parliament. The debate will run until 5 pm on Saturday and will be initiated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The breakthrough came in early December after talks between Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and floor leaders of various parties. A consensus was reached, allowing for discussions in both Houses of Parliament on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption by the Constituent Assembly.

At the meeting, Speaker Om Birla facilitated the discussions, with both government and opposition parties agreeing to set the dates for the debate. Opposition parties had long pushed for the debate, emphasising the importance of marking this milestone in India’s democratic journey.

Several opposition leaders, who attended the meeting, echoed similar sentiments, calling for a substantive and reflective discussion on the Constitution’s legacy and its relevance in the present day.

With the dates now set and the participation of key leaders confirmed, the upcoming debate in Parliament promises to be a landmark event, with both the ruling party and opposition seeking to assert their perspectives on India’s constitutional journey.

BJP to deploy top leaders

The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to deploy its senior leaders for a high-profile debate, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to respond to the debate in the Lok Sabha.

The two-day debate, which will take place in both Houses of Parliament, is part of a broader effort by the BJP to steer the discourse on India’s legal framework and reaffirm its commitment to constitutional values.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are anticipated to participate in their respective Houses.

Nadda, who is the leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, and Singh, the BJP's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, are among the prominent figures who will take part in the discussions. The party's strategic deployment of its top brass reflects its intent to ensure smooth functioning in Parliament and present a united front on the Constitution, which marks its 75th anniversary of adoption this year.
