Parliament informed about launch of all-weather RISAT-1

NEW DELHI: Informing Parliament about the successful launch of India's first indigenous all-weather radar imaging satellite RISAT-1, Government today said that it will help in the management of agriculture and natural disasters like flood.

Making a statement in both Houses of Parliament, Minister of State for PMO V Naryanasamy hailed the launch of the country's first indigenously developed radar imaging satellite from Sriharikota in Andhara Pradesh as a "splendid national accomplishment".

He said today's launch marks 20th consecutive successful launch of the PSLV.

"RISAT-1 is India's first indigenously developed Radar Imaging Satellite and is the heaviest satellite launched till date using the PSLV. It carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload capable of cloud penetration and day-night imaging.

"This would primarily enable applications in agriculture, in particular paddy monitoring in Kharif season, and management of natural disasters like floods and cyclones," Naryanasamy said.

The perfect launch of the satellite catapulted India into a select band of countries having indigenous radar imaging technology.
