Panchayat election: Govt offices ransacked, set on fire in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district

GUWAHATI: Government offices were ransacked and set on fire by an angry mob in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district on Friday.

Supporters from a student’s union set on fire the office of Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), post office and Special Bureau besides ransacking the police station of Vijaynagar.

A government official, who did not want to be named, said: “Armed with sticks, bows, irate mobs came to Gandhigram area. Even the hospital was damaged.” Additional deployment is rushed to the area.


These people are demanding thousands of Assam Rifles personnel who are settled in the area must not get the right to vote in the Panchayat election. They want these people to be evicted from this area.

Vijaynagar is remotely located. Participation of Assam Rifles personnel in the December 22 panchayat polls was opposed by several student organisations.

Already 5,564 BJP candidates won local body elections unopposed.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the BJP government believes in decentralization of power. He said the municipality is presently allotted power over 13 subjects despite assurances earlier over 20. He assured to extend power over all 20 subjects if BJP is able to form the government in local municipal bodies.
