JAMMU: Pakistani Rangers indulged in heavy firing and mortar shelling overnight on eight border outposts and some villages along the international border in Jammu district, leaving one person injured.

"Pakistani Rangers resorted to small arms firing and mortar shelling along IB in R S Pura sector of Jammu district since 2200 hours last night," a BSF official said today.

They targeted eight border outposts (BoPs) and some civilian areas, he said adding that Pakistani Rangers also fired 81 mm mortar shells.

In the firing, Khadim Hussain in Jora Farm village suffered minor splinter injuries, a police officer said.

BSF troops guarding the border line retaliated effectively and the firing exchange continued till 0100 hours today, PRO said.

There have been three ceasefire violations along IB in Samba, Arnia and R S Pura in February this year.

In January this year, Pakistan resorted to several ceasefire violations resulting in death of four people and injuries to seven people.

A major terror bid may have been foiled on January 1, 2015 by the North-West Coast Guard. A 'terror' boat which is believed to have sailed from Pakistan's Karachi was intercepted by the Coast Guard off Porbander coast.

The Coast Guard ship warned the fishing boat to stop for further investigation of the crew and cargo; however, the boat increased speed and tried to escape away from the Indian side of maritime boundary, the government said.

"As per the intelligence inputs received on December 31, a fishing boat from KetiBunder near Karachi was planning some illicit transaction in Arabian Sea.

Based on the input, Coast Guard Dornier aircraft undertook sea - air coordinated search and located the suspect fishing boat," the release said.

According to the government, Coast Guard ships and aircraft are continuing operations in area to search for any possible survivor. "Coast Guard and other security agencies are maintaining high vigil in maritime and coastal areas since last couple of months due to several inputs on threat from the sea," the government sought to assure.
