Pakistan claims India has 120 of its citizens as prisoners, lodges protest
NEW DELHI: Pakistan has lodged a protest with India alleging that the presence of 120 of its prisoners in India has not been acknowledged by New Delhi.

This was after the two countries exchanged on July 1, a fresh list of prisoners in keeping with the agreement on consular access signed between the two countries in May 2008.

While India handed over to Islamabad a list of 278 Pakistani prisoners, Islamabad claimed that it actually has 398 prisoners, including 45 fishermen, lodged in Indian jails.

Pakistan authorities have taken up the issue with India officially.

Islamabad had earlier registered another protest after India agreed to release only 88, and not 97, Pakistani fishermen ahead of Ramzan.

This was after PM Narendra Modi called up his counterpart Nawaz Sharif to convey his good wishes to the neighbouring country for Ramzan and said that India was going to release Pakistani fishermen to mark the holy month.

According to Pakistan, it had confirmed the nationality of 97 fishermen to Indian authorities and that Indian authorities ignored this to release only 88 fishermen.

In fact, Pakistan said, India finally released only 82 Pakistani fishermen.
