ISLAMABAD: Angry protesters blocked key highways in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province on the fourth day of the unrest sparked by the killing of tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in an Army operation as the number of those detained in connection with rioting rose to nearly 700.

Baloch nationalist parties continued with their general strike against Bugti’s killing and blocked several highways, including the main highway liking provincial capital Quetta with Karachi as well as Makran highway connecting Gwardar port city with Sindh, reports reaching here said.

Sporadic violence continued in Quetta. On Tuesday, four persons were killed in a bomb blasts in a hotel at the Hub town. Police also said the number of those detained since violence erupted following the killing of Bugti on Saturday had gone up to 700.

Police reportedly blocked the entry of workers to Hub town from nearby places to prevent further incidents. Most of the towns, including Quetta, wore a deserted look.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Balochistan Choudhary Yacub said that a number of settlers in Quetta and other places have received communications to leave the province immediately or face consequences.
