Pakistan Army kills 80 militants in Buner area

Eighty Taliban militants have been killed in the ongoing military operation in Pakistan's Buner district, TV reports said.

ISLAMABAD: Eighty Taliban militants have been killed in the ongoing military operation in Pakistan's Buner district, TV reports said.

The Pakistani Army had launched a major offensive against Taliban militants in Buner district on Tuesday.

Some 500 militants are still hiding in the area, Geo TV said citing Army Commander Brigadier Fayyaz. He said 80 militants and three security personnel have been killed in the operation so far.

The security forces have recently foiled an attack by militants in the Ambila area of the district, he added. He said the neighbouring Daggar area has been cleared of the militants.

The operation against the militants will continue, Fayyaz said. The militants entered the district last month from the restive Swat valley and had set up their own checkpoints to patrol the area.

The militants want to enforce the Sharia (Islamic law) in the area, media reports said.
