KARACHI: Pakistan's criminal investigation agency today claimed to have unearthed a major plot to unleash terror attacks on religious processions during the month of Muharram, with the arrest of a Taliban activist.

Crime Investigation Division (CID) official Fayyaz Khan told media that they had arrested a key activist of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban, Rehman Alias Saeed, who was planning terror attacks during the Ashura processions.

"CID arrested Haji Rehman alias Saeed from Sohrab Goth with explosives," said Khan.

He said that at least six accomplices of the accused have managed to escape during the raid.

At least 10 kg of explosive material, 3 detonators, an AK rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunitions were recovered from the accused, he added.

The government has stepped up security in Karachi ahead of Muharram, during which large gatherings and processions are held.

The high security alert comes after a bomb attack on the Ashura procession last year in which around 50 people were killed.
